Greg Scholl 481- The Last Coal Burner
The Durango and Silverton decided to operate a winter photographers train, and we are treated to having 481 as the power. Due to fire hazards and insurance issues the railroad has been converting its fleet of steam engines to burn oil. As a precaution the coal burner, 481, is only allowed to operate in the winter, and preferably when there is snow on the ground. A few days prior to these trips there was a good snowfall. Down in the valley much of it had melted but in the higher elevations there is plenty of snow to enjoy. The consist is a mixed train with freight cars, coaches, and a caboose, which is similar to the way the former Denver & Rio Grande Western operated the Branch line to Silverton into the 1960's. We should also point out the lighting was spectacular with blue cloudless skies both days. On the first day we see the engine backing to the train at Durango, and get a couple of close-ups. Then we chase the train from Durango and see it in the valley, and climbing Hermosa Hill to Rockwood. At Rockwood we board the train, and do several well-planned photo runbys in the remote and scenic Animas River Canyon. There were two runbys on the High Bridge over the river near Tacoma, and then we enjoy scenes along the river from the train. We stop for Water at Tank Creek, and enjoy watching the proceedings there. We stop for several trackside runbys at places like the cement wall, Goblin Fire with its twin snowcapped peaks in the background, Bubbling Rock, Teft Bridge, the highline and more. The sun is nearly perfect for all these video clips as we head back to Rockwood. From Rockwood we again chase the train back to Durango, culminating in a really cool shot of a deer pacing the train then running across in front of it, and bounding over a split rail fence, all in lovely late afternoon sunshine. After a huge day of getting great video, our day continues with a night photo shoot in Durango near the roundhouse. As we watch the engine sitting in the fading twilight, we have a history segment on the 481, and even see a few clips of it in 8mm movies during the 1960's. We discuss its move to Durango on the last train from Alamosa, and its return to service on the Durango and Silverton. We then enjoy some nice shots at night including cleaning the fire, taking coal, a spin on the turntable, and backing into the roundhouse where we see a nice line-up of motive power to close our day. The Monday, February 28, 2022 trip has the special as the only train on the railroad. The Cascade Canyon train doesn't run on Monday, so we have the railroad to ourselves. We first make a trip around the turning loop in Durango, since the train had not been turned the day before. Then we shoot video up Hermosa Hill from the train from Hermosa to Rockwood. In between we stop at what is called the mini-highline just east of Shalona Crossing, and do 2 morning runbys. As usual 481 puts on a great show. We then do runbys near Rockwood and along the highline shelf west of Rockwood. We also do stops at the former AH Wilderness Guest Ranch, and both scenes feature Galloping Goose #5 in the shots as it was running as a special charter too. We move north, or railroad west, and do a pair of runbys at the cribbed wall along the river, Goblins Fire, and a few repeat, as well as new locations back to Rockwood. We end along the highline horseshoe with low lighting in this famous region. This show has something for everyone, and is being released just 2 months from when the video was captured. 481 for now is the last coal burner, and we seldom get to experience it operating. Who knows if it will remain a coal-burner or be converted to oil. The variety of locations is very good, with only a few repeat locations from day to day. This was sold as 2 separate days, but folks who did both days were treated to additional locations. The weather was outstanding, and the scenery as beautiful as ever, and maybe even better given the rare opportunity to capture great steam action in this remote region in the middle of winter. There is nothing like low winter sunlight for photography. Running Time 100 min. |

Greg Scholl Big Boys & Challlengers
This video has been years in the making, as we have attempted to accumulate enough footage to justify such a release. We have 8mm footage by Warren Scholl, shot in 1954, but the majority of footage is 16mm color footage, including a good amount by Perry Becker (Of Perry's Hobbies) who made more than one trip to the area. Locations shown are North Platte, Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins, and of course action on Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie. You will see interesting things such as a "Big Boy" number 4006 on fire as it exits Hermosa Tunnel, with its stack hood still on as well. Also see a Gas Turbine leading a Big Boy in 3 different scenes. You will see the engine service areas in the locations mentioned above, and see some of the dead engine lines late in the steam era. This footage is all shot silent of course, and we have added music and informative narration. However, we do have another segment with some 16mm sound footage on Sherman Hill which includes several doubleheaders, such as 5500 series 2-10-2's with Challengers and Big Boys. There are also a couple of Big Boy scenes by Everett Rohrer, and some film he shot of the first test run, and first excursions in 1982 when Challenger 3985 first operated. So, for all those lovers of BIG BOYS, and big articulated steam Giants this one is for you. Running Time 45 min. +23 min of Previews |

Greg Scholl BNSF Variety
Shot between 2007 and 2020, we take you to mostly western venues to see a wide variety of diesel power and scenic locations. We begin with an Amtrak segment, but on BNSF’s Raton Pass line which features some semaphore shots made in 2020. These were the last ones on the line, and may be gone by the time you read this. We see both trains 3 and 4, The Southwest Chief on two different days of operation. So this is an interesting way to start our show. Next we move into Colorado to Palmer Lake south of Colorado Springs. This is the Joint line of the BNSF and the Union Pacific. We see 3 different BNSF trains including some with distributed power on the rear. Next we move over to the front range west of Denver and see a Union Pacific Train, and a BNSF descending the grade. These have distributed power helpers as well. Staying in Colorado we head to Fort Collins where we see some street running. We see a Union Pacific local train, as well as two BNSF trains heading north. It’s interesting to see the trains mix with the city traffic and pedestrians. Next we venture to the Powder River basin for coal train action. This is mainly shot not far from Gillette, but a bit south of there. We see a parade of loaded and empty trains, mostly with distributed power helpers. There is also some older power on a ballast train, and a local train. You will also see some oil well pumps bobbing in the foreground of some scenes. This is all shot in fine weather as well. Now we move to further north and west to the Wind River Canyon region. This scenic area follows the Wind River and the canyon is very scenic. We see some foreign power as well as some older units, besides the usual modern wide-cabs. Most trains are manifest mixed freights. This area is not seen too often. Our final segment is one of the longer segments feature the Montana Rail Link trackage. We begin with an MRL local train, then see mostly BNSF trains using the MRL to get to the Pacific NW parts of Portland and Seattle. Most of the footage is shot west of Helen in the helper district over Mullan Pass. Most trains are BNSF with helpers, or distributed power or both. A couple of MRL trains are seen, including one that has manned helpers cut in mid-train. Trains are working hard, and the scenery is great, with many shots around Austin Creek trestle, and Austin, among others. As you've read there is a lot packed into this contemporary diesel video. Greg Scholl Burlington Route Steam
Through the 16mm films of Everett Rohrer and Perry Becker (Of Perry's Hobbies) we can enjoy Burlington Route Steam from the upper Midwest to the states of Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. Regular service operations include Burlington’s ancient 4-6-0 number 919 on mixed train service from Cheyenne to Sterling, CO in 1956, and several Colorado and Southern steamers in Colorado in switching service. Colorado excursions are covered with C&S 2-8-0 #647, as well as 2-10-2 number 902 which later has the Great Western 2-10-0 #90 take over the train at Longmont. Several trips with 2-8-0 #638 are shown including its last run in December 1962. The big steam stars on The CB&Q(Burlington), are 4-6-4 Hudson number 3003, 4-8-4 #5632, and 2-8-2 #4960. There are many trips with 5632 and 4960, which were the last steamers in service on the Burlington. Action with 5632 is mainly out of Minneapolis into Wisconsin, but there is one trip in Colorado. 4960 is seen in Colorado, Nebraska, and on the circus train in Wisconsin a couple of weeks before 4960’s final run in 1966. All this is steam-era action with Colorado & Southern, and CB&Q under the umbrella of Burlington Route Steam. Historical action footage of a bygone era of steam railroading in the United States. Greg Scholl Canadian Vintage Steam
This program is new for 2008-2009 and includes a variety of steam action in several areas of Canada. Most of it is 16mm, from a variety of sources, but there is also a little bit of 8mm shot by Warren Scholl in 1958 of CN 4-8-2 number 6079 in Windsor, Ontario, and some CP commuter steam near Montreal in the summer of 1959. In this section we see a few G3 Pacifics, as well as 4-6-4 Royal Hudson 2822 in service. The 16mm material includes a section out west with Canadian Pacific action in the area of Kicking Horse Pass, and Banf, with some rare views of 2-10-4 Selkirk type engines plus a few others. Then there is a mish-mash of steam segment including a neat scene of a rare New York Central snowplow train with two ancient NYC steam engines in Southern Ontario. The core of the program is a neat visit over several days to Manitoba by Perry Becker (Of Perry's Hobbies) in July of 1959 where we see tons of action with both Canadian Pacific, and Canadian National, plus a couple of scenes of rare first generation diesels that wonder into the frame. There are scenes in Portage La Prairie, as well as the engine service areas of the CP and the CN at Winnipeg. If you have seen our Canadian Steam 1958 and 1959 then you will enjoy this, since several of the same engines are seen here as well, but not on the same visit. We also included a short segment of CN 4-8-4 6218 in excursion service in the 60's, and a few steam tractors in Canada as well. Music and Narration as no steam sounds exist with these silent films of course. Many of these scenes we rescued from odd films we have found here and there, and while some are short snippets they are now preserved at least for others to see. The snow plow scene was one such scene like some others where we had no clue who the photographers were. However, all the Becker footage, and Scholl footage is well documented in the script. A nice variety of steam in Canada. Running Time 50 min. |

Greg Scholl DM&IR Steam Variety
This program is a great companion to our DM&IR Yellowstones-Giants of Steam. It has many things in it not seen in the other, which makes both videos great to own. The new DM&IR Steam Variety has many scenes of Proctor Engine terminal as well as Two Harbors terminal. Yes, there is plenty of 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone footage, and besides the ore hauling, we see them performing ore-thawing service, and in some late steam-era excursion service as well. Besides the big Yellowstones we also see a variety of other DM&IR steam engines including switching duties with ex-Bessemer engines and DM&IR power. We will see the well-proportioned 2-10-4's and other locos moving about the yard areas too. This footage is all 16mm film originals, and shot by Perry Becker (Of Perry's Hobbies) of Minnesota. We have also included a few minutes of the nearby shortline Duluth and Northeastern Railway, that was shot by Maynard Laing during the same period as the Becker Films. All of the films have sound added by us. As with most films there was none that was shot on the film. However, we used audio that we had from 1958-59 visits recorded by Elwin Purington, that we also used on the DM&IR Yellowstones video. All the audio on this Steam Variety program that shows Yellowstones, has Authentic Yellowstone audio with those scenes. Other locomotives may not be authentic to their classes, but in most cases the scenes don't matter that much, since they are slow switching moves. The Duluth and North Eastern Audio is authentic also, since it was recorded about the time they were there. As mentioned there are few excursion scenes shown, including one in 1961 which had two Yellowstones running on two separate excursions on the exact same day. One was from Two Harbors and one from Duluth. We see shots from both, which had Yellowstones 224 and 225 on the different excursion trains. This program is slightly longer than the first one we did, thus is $5.00 more in cost. I think both this one and the DM&IR Yellowstones-Giants of Steam should be in all steam fan collections, especially those that enjoy big vintage steam power. Running Time 44 mins. |

Greg Scholl DM&IR Yellowstones, Giants of Steam
The massive Yellowstone type 2-8-8-4 locomotives operated by the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range railroad in Minnesota were among the largest steam locomotives to ever run, and in 1958 and 1959 they were still hard at work. When other railroads in the United States were either entirely dieselized or nearly so, the DM&IR Yellowstones soldiered on for a few extra years. In this video, which was from original 16mm film shot by the late Maynard Laing, we visit the area on different trips, and enjoy pacing, lineside, and engine servicing with these famous locomotives. Incredible sequences where two of these monsters pass is hard to imagine, and what makes it all the more unique is that Mr. Laings longtime friend, Elwin Purington was there with his reel to reel audio tape recording capturing the sounds of these engines. Now some 40 years later we have merged the sights and sounds together for an enjoyable experience that will explore the history and excitement of the DM&IR Yellowstones. Vintage photos and historical information from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth are a fine compliment to this rare film. Running Time 30 mins. |

Greg Scholl F-Units and More
In this nice video we combine several subjects into one great show. This is an accumulation of material from 3-4 different guys, and we enjoy a lot of operational F-units over several years, beginning in 2007. We begin with some charters in Minnesota and diesels from the Minnesota Transportation Museum. We see a lovely Soo Line F-unit number 2500, as well as 2 former Erie Mining F-units. These are seen solo and with them on each end of ore cars together. A rare RS-1 is seen as well as a steam engine on a regular tourist train on the line. Next we see one shot of former Canadian National(and VIA) FPA-4 6793 on a regular tourist train on the Grand Canyon Railroad passing our photo special with steam engines 29 and 4960. In 2007 we enjoy the 4 Norfolk Southern F-units on a private excursion train out of Knoxville en route to Asheville. We will see these again later also. These are nice since they are running specials for a Class 1 railroad and are a matched set with A-B-B-A lash-ups. Next we see Clinchfield 800 pulling a dead C&O 2-8-4 number 2716 from New Haven, Kentucky (Kentucky Railway Museum to Ravena, KY, plus a couple shots of 800 on an excursion in Ohio. The 800 runs over the KRM tracks, the CSX, and the RJ Corman railroad with 2716, and over the former DT&I on the Ohio Excursion to Springfield, Ohio. We visit the West Virginia Central where we see an F-7, and a BL-2 in Western Maryland Livery. In this we also see a side-by-side runby with a Shay from the Cass Scenic Railroad. This is some neat action as part of a photo special on the railroad. We do a photo special on the Potomac Eagle, in West Virginia and they have F-Unit number 722 in Baltimore and Ohio livery, and F-Unit 1755 in Potomac Eagle livery. This is a scenic route along the South Branch of The Potomac River south of Romeny, WV. We also see a short freight with GP9R's. There are a few scenes of two different ex-Canadian National FPA-4's in action on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad near Cleveland, Ohio. These were shot on two trips by 2 photographers. There are a couple of "More" surprises here as well. We finish up with 2 or 3 shots of the 4 Norfolk Southern F-Units in executive service in Ohio including a neat night scene to close out the show. Two of these units were sold to a short line in the south, and the other two were sold to the Reading and Northern in Pennsylvania. It's cool to have these 4 F-units on mainline Norfolk Southern Trackage. As you can see there is a nice variety of F-Units here, and a few surprises to go along with them in various segments. We think you will enjoy it very much, especially since some are now historic. Live audio and limited narration. Running Time 103 mins. |

Greg Scholl Ohio Central Cab Rides & Trackside
This video features cab rides in both of the big engines on the Ohio Central, but then continues with more scenes shot trackside for additional runbys and action shots. We begin with a day in Sugarcreek on June 7, 2002 with scenes of ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 on the Sugarcreek to Baltic excursions. We shoot lineside runbys, then later in the day get a cab ride in the engine to Baltic, where the engine runs around the train to pull the train back northward tender-first. The very next day, June 8, 2002 we are in Dennison for a run, that begins with ex-Grand Trunk Railroad 4-8-4 6325. Owner Jerry Jacobson was there at the station, and I spoke to him briefly just before the trip departed. I asked him if someday I could get a ride in the engine, and he said “Sure Greg, how about right now”. So an unexpected cab ride from Dennison took place to a runby location west toward Morgan Run. We get several fine views inside the cab, as well as shooting outside the doorway on the firemans side. Jason Johnson who was the engineer the day before on the Sugarcreek train’s 1293, was the fireman for this segment. There are scenes of the engineer working the throttle, whistle, brakes, and more. We see the fireman working the injector and the stoker engine, checking the water, the fire, and the track ahead. As we leave town we look down the boiler on the firemans side and see former Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4 #2700 on a siding awaiting a cosmetic restoration. Our cab ride ends at a farm field where there was a photo runby. After shooting the photo runby, I boarded the train for some onboard scenes, from the coach, and the tool car. I got off at Morgan Run, and this is where 6325 came off the train. The train went up the connection leg with F-units to Sugar Creek, and we got a couple of shots of that. At Sugarcreek, CPR 4-6-2 1293 was working a Sugarcreek to Baltic trip and we got a couple shots of that. Meanwhile 6325 backed up the line from Morgan Run. Later the train was doubleheaded with 1293 leading 6325 south toward Morgan Run. We got a few scenes of this, before the engines made a nice photo runby at Morgan Run. Diesels would pull the train back to Dennison. There was a lot going on in this one day starting with the cab ride in 6325. This show like the Last Steam On Ohio Central were edited and released in 2021, and this is all new footage never released in any other videos until now. Enjoy the steam on what once was a great steam operation in central Ohio. Running Time 87 min. |

Greg Scholl QJ 67988 in Iowa
This locomotive gets little attention, and it deserves more. There are few places in the U.S. today where you can see mainline standard gauge steam in operation. This regional railroad, the Iowa Interstate Railroad owns 2 of these 2-10-2's, and the 6988 has been modified to look a bit more American. The QJ class 2-10-2's were the famous and widely used class in China which had steam running until around 2010 or so. We will learn about the history of the QJ class with some actual shots in China, plus learn about its coming to America. We begin with a May 2019 break-in run for 6988 which departs from its home base of Newton, Iowa. The engine pulls freight cars, and periodic stops were made to inspect the engine. The train ran east to South Amana yard, where everything was turned for the trip back to Newton. We get several nice runbys, as well as pacing views beside the engine. The engine had several whistles on this day and we hear them all. This was an unpublicized train, thus few photographers knew about it. Now we fast-forward to August 2021, and are back in Iowa. 6988 has a passenger consist, and we start the day with the early morning (6:45 am) departure from South Amana eastward to Wilton. There were some nice shots on this morning run including some at speed. At Wilton there were 4 short excursions that were run eastward. A diesel was on the rear to pull the train back west to Wilton after the 6988 put on a show going east from town. On each run the train would back out of Wilton westward, and then come roaring through town with the passengers onboard. It was quite the show, and we capture this 2 to 3 times. We get 2 shots on a couple of the trips. We also learn more history between trips, and see some nice close-ups of the engine, and some engine servicing. If all that wasn't enough we have included another QJ, number 2008, operating on a train of sand cars in 2012. The engine was owned by the R.J, Corman Company in Louisville, Kentucky, and ran only a few times during its tenure on the railroad. This run is on former Louisville & Nashville trackage from Lexington to a wye at Christiansburg. We get good coverage of this in both directions, including turning, and runbys. Again this was not a public event so only a few knew about the run. This segment is a great addition to the 6988 material. It was a rare operation of the engine. Some may not like these so-called "Foreign" engines, but the action is great and its still steam on U.S. mainlines. Live audio and limited narration. Running Time 81 min. |

Greg Scholl Rio Grande Steam in the 1960s
Travel back in time with us to explore the Denver and Rio Grande Western (Rio Grande) narrow gauge operations between Alamosa, Chama, Durango and Silverton. These expertly shot 16mm films were accumulated by Clarence (Father), Perry, and Jim Becker (Of Perry's Hobbies) between 1957 and 1968, with visits being made in 1957, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1968. For more details click... There is a nice mix of passenger and freight operations in this program. The Beckers first ride the Durango to Silverton Train in 1957, as their introduction to the railroad. As a bonus we see K27 number 464 as the Durango yard engine, switching coaches in what would be its last season of operation on the Rio Grande. In 1961 the Becker brothers made a trip to narrow gauge land, and start by photographing a passenger special from Alamosa, and then west of Chama, photograph a doubleheaded freight toward Chama in the late afternoon, followed by more freight operations. Subsequent visits throughout the sixties brings us a nice variety of Durango activities with some excellent shots north of Rockwood along the spectacular High-Line where the train traverses the ledge high above the Animas River Canyon. There is plenty of freight action, as we see doubleheaders out of Durango up Bocea hill, and headed east toward Chama. There is also a doubleheader seen Westbound between Arboles and Durango. Several runs up the 4% grade from Chama to Cumbres are shown, including more than one run in one day. On one trip the train with rear helper stalls, and the sections have to be split. There is doubleheader action from Alamosa to Antonito, where trains were split, and an engine inserted mid-train for the run west to Cumbres. On one such run from Alamosa we see the first run for engine 492, along with 484, after 492 was repaired from its collision with a huge boulder a month or so earlier near Navajo. This is a fine collection of images, and all on 16mm. Its 85% color, with only one section being black and white, which was due to a processing malfunction. Like 95% of all vintage films, there was no train sounds on the films, so we have added some nice music, and set-up narration about important aspects of the footage. This is the first of several eventual programs that will feature part or all of the Becker films. Running Time 60 min. |

The southern Rockies are the fabulous scenery for this incredible event as K-36 locomotive 487 and 488 push the rotary higher into the mountains to clear drifts as high as the top of the Rotary. Greg Scholl Union Pacific Steam V 2
We begin in Cheyenne as 8444 has received its original number 844 (a UP diesel was retired with 844) and is set for a July 1989 outing. The 844 was requested to host the opening of the new Dispatch Center in Omaha and pull the UP Board of Directors on a dinner train. The coaches are already there, so 844 pulls regular freight trains 500 miles over a two day span to Omaha. Then at Omaha we see 844 pull the evening dinner train, with some nice low light shots. After the event is over, 844 has to head home to Cheyenne and pulls two more freight trains over a 2-day span, making for a total of 5 different trains on the video, and 4 are freights complete with a caboose. On the return we are also treated to some nice 65 mph pacing scenes next to the engine. You'll enjoy the Nebraska landscape as we hit the major spots along the way, and even see 844 on the turntable in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This was the first run of 844, and we were the only video company there. Running Time 60 min. |

Greg Scholl Wrecks & Clean-up Trains
This video contains some unusual content as we have combined footage collected over many years. This shows mainly the aftermath of wrecks and derailments and in some cases the clean-up with cranes, dozers, and other methods. Most are diesel related but a few steam items are included. This is footage you won't find anywhere else. Something different for sure. There is a lot of interesting material in this one-of-a-kind show you won't find in any other video presentations. Music and narration guide you along in this show made from converted films to video. No sound of course with these old films. Lots of info though. Running Time 49 min. |
